What We Know Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 people perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have stated the death toll is 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were transported to medical facilities.

The deceased are yet to be formally identified, but police believe their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the individuals who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She told the events before the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with five in critical condition. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
