We are verifying images and video shared earlier today that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials state killed a senior soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he later died to his wounds. A probe is under way.

The initial step to verify the site of where the images originated relied on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.

Locating additional buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the footage were taken.

We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been digital alteration.
