When an teenage creates club a historic moment in a crucial Champions League tie against City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.
In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time European champions claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to confirm a last eight place.
At 18 years old, Pitarch was the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.
He signed for Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.
Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and determination he added to the team.
During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited the youngster to train with the senior squad and awarded him minutes during the warm-up matches.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his career as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I began playing the game, each day you head to training and every day you have a game," said Pitarch following his first appearance.
"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."
Given a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.
Pitarch has seized it with displays that have belied his age and experience.
"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He's incredibly energetic, with great stamina, effort and mobility."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.
"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I realize people are surprised to see him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to perform his normal game.
"He will keep receiving chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, progressing through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.
He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the option to play for either country at senior international level.
According to international regulations, footballers may appear for different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a competitive full international.
Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the under-19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are watching his rise with interest.
Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my final decision so far. Things are positive with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."
His situation mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Brahim decided to represent the Atlas Lions.
For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.
He played over an hour in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the team chase future success.
Following his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the same. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to think about it excessively - I have to deserve my minutes on the pitch," he commented following the success at Etihad Stadium.
