Although not quite at the equivalent scale as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official experienced a presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued since the commencement of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life away from worry.”
This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, donated by a first responder, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “six seven” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently named “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: happy, varied, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Every time, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
