The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Track

This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, revealed a new opening credits. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several heart-wrenching backstories for characters including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.

All in all, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the song choice.

The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition composed by artist the talented musician. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will love its presence.

Personally, The series' intro fails to capture the excitement and energy that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.

Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords for me. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is a little off.

Of course, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have some changes and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro seems to be among these.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to learn about the characters of the second series, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
