The 30-year-old golfer displayed exceptional nerve to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, defeating his compatriot in a tense play-off following a topsy-turvy last day of competition.
The Englishman sank a decisive birdie from around eight feet to seal the victory, echoing his only previous Rolex Series success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a playoff win over Fleetwood.
The champion started the last day with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that included seven birdies and two bogeys.
The challenger edged one shot clear with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie on the sixteenth, but Rai tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the final hole.
That led to a play-off at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to take the title and $1.5m (ÂŁ1.13 million) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a world-class player and an even better individual. To compete alongside him the last two days was truly memorable,” stated the winner, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s difficult to put into words at the moment how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”
The Northern Irish star found himself a bit too far to make up, finishing a stroke behind in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 10-under closing round of 62. It was his best-ever score on the DP World Tour, comprising eight birdies and one eagle.
Højgaard fired six birdie putts of his own, but his hopes of topping the leaderboard were hit by a bogey on the 12th. English golfer Richard Mansell hit an excellent final-round 63 to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
