The acclaimed broadcaster and filmmaker, Sir Humphrey Burton, has died at 94 years old.

The respected director, who transformed classical music programming, passed away at home surrounded by his loved ones.

A Life Devoted to the Arts

Born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, in 1931, Burton became one of the industry’s most respected broadcasters, introducing the wonder of classical music to the wider audience.

He was the BBC’s head of music and arts in the 1960s and 1970s, receiving awards for programmes such as The Golden Ring.

He also initiated the Young Musician of the Year competition in 1978, a platform that discovered talents such as violinist Nicola Benedetti.

Broadcasting figures and institutions voiced their sadness, noting his huge influence on generations of arts programme-makers.
