After a decisive victory at the Qatar Grand Prix, the Red Bull driver has substantially reduced the margin in the driver's standings. He now finds himself just a dozen points behind leader Lando Norris and ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri, the scene is set for a thrilling three-way title decider at the renowned Yas Marina Circuit.
The Dutchman's latest win was far from predictable. Even though he delivered a masterful drive for Red Bull, the victory was largely determined by a questionable strategic move from the Woking-based team. Choosing to stay on track during an early safety car period, McLaren presented the advantage to Verstappen, who seized the moment perfectly.
"I'm excited, I'm happy to go there and fight for it," he stated. "My mindset is with just optimism. I will give everything I can but at the same time, even without the title, I still know that I had an incredible season."
This philosophy according to him removes much of the pressure. The goal for the last race is simple: to get the most from everything possible from himself and the machine.
The incredible part of this championship charge truly astonishing is the distance he has recovered. Following the Dutch Grand Prix in August, he was a staggering 104 points behind the championship leader Oscar Piastri and had openly dismissed his championship hopes.
The turnaround began with substantial technical upgrades introduced by Red Bull at the Monza. Adjustments to the car's floor and aerodynamic package rectified ongoing performance deficits, allowing Verstappen to push to the limit with the car once more.
From then on, his performance has been utterly dominant, securing five wins and several top-three finishes. He was quick to credit the unified work behind this resurgence.
"We have achieved victories where maybe the odds were against us, by executing the optimal strategy as a team," he explained. "The way I work with my race engineer and the entire crew... we are really well integrated."
With the paddock travel to Abu Dhabi, the mathematics is utterly compelling.
The intensity rests heavily on the papaya-colored cars, who have watched a comfortable advantage evaporate due to costly errors, including a double disqualification in Las Vegas. From his perspective, the situation allows for fearlessness, transforming the final race into a straight shot at the title with zero pressure.
