Madeleine McCann's Parent Urges Tougher Media Regulation Following Recollections of Media "Hounding".

The father of Madeleine McCann has urged for increased scrutiny of the UK media, detailing how sustained media attention made him feel as if he was being "suffocated and buried".

The McCanns Tormented by Press "Abuses"

Gerry McCann stated that his family was subjected to press "excesses" and that the media had "repeatedly interfered with" the investigation into his daughter's going missing in 2007.

He stated that the intrusion took a "heavy burden" on his family. "We faced sustained interest and misleading headlines for 15 months or more that compelled us to take legal action to stop it," he explained.

"We are lucky. We got through it. We had tremendous support. However, I assure you, there were times where I felt like I was being suffocated, and it was the media, primarily, not the situation we were in," he recounted.

An Appeal for Revive Press Regulation Review

The McCanns are among dozens of individuals who have signed a letter calling on ministers to restart the second phase of the Leveson investigation, which was intended to examine the relationship between the media and the police.

McCann said it was not acceptable that more than a year on, press regulation was "no longer a priority". He said that his family had been subjected to "monstering" by certain the media and that the press was "posted" outside his home for months after Madeleine went missing.

Recounting the Intrusion

Recalling the harassment, he said: "Media at our doorstep, photographers pushing their cameras against our car window, when we had two-year-old twins in the back who were frightened, and how traumatic that is for you as a parent."

"It's the misleading narratives. It's the making up of stories to drive a headline, rather than the truth, which causes immense harm," he stated.

The Need for Stronger Regulation and Accountability

He argued this behavior highlighted why there needed to be tougher press regulation. "We'd be getting ready for bed, we'd put on the news, and there'd be major reports about ourselves and what supposedly happened," he said.

"That feeling is overwhelming, and you can see how people are broken by it and think they can't get out of it. It's so damaging, and we need that protection. There has to be redress. And at the minute, for most of the large media outlets, there is little accountability," he asserted.

Government Position and Evolving News Environment

The Culture Secretary said that a follow-up part of the inquiry had been discounted and that the media landscape was now very different.

"We share the view that the landscape has transformed significantly from the time the second part of Leveson was proposed: the public is now more likely to get their news online from a whole variety of sources, which has presented new and different challenges," they stated.

It was also noted that weighing the rights of victims with the principle of press freedom was a "challenging task to get right," but conceded that "action is needed in this area".

An Enduring Search for Answers

Madeleine McCann disappeared from a family vacation apartment in 2007 at the age of three. It was stated that it was "absolutely dismaying" how the press had frequently obstructed with the investigation.

"Confidential details which was meant for police only... This meant a potential culprit, you knew a lot more than you should have done," he explained.

Regarding the ongoing search, he said the possibility he would find his daughter was "slim but it's not extinguished". "We hope to find her alive, but we need to discover the truth and bring whoever's responsible, and others are at risk while whoever is responsible is free," he affirmed.
