Israel Gives Green Light to Nineteen New Outposts in Disputed Palestinian Territories

The nation's top security body has given its endorsement to the establishment of 19 additional outposts in the occupied Palestinian territories, signaling a continued campaign for community development.

Far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a settler who proposed the move together with Defence Minister Israel Katz, stated that the move was intended for blocking the formation of a sovereign Palestine.

It is important to note that Jewish communities in the occupied West Bank are viewed as illegal.

The announcement has sparked condemnation from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has previously stated that Israel's "relentless" settlement expansion exacerbates frictions, restricts Palestinians' access to territory, and threatens the viability of a independent Palestine.

Escalating Tensions and Diplomatic Repercussions

Clashes in the occupied West Bank has escalated since the conflict in Gaza began in October 2023, adding to fears that settlement expansion could deepen the Israeli presence and weaken the chance for a two-state solution.

The concept of two states involves the creation of a Palestinian state in the Palestinian territories, with East Jerusalem as its capital, largely along the borders that were in place before the 1967 Middle East war.

Since taking office in 2022, the incumbent government in Jerusalem has ramped up the approval of new settlements and begun the process of legalization for informal settler outposts, recognising them as "neighbourhoods" of established communities.

A Pattern of Growth

The most recent approval brings the total number of settlements recognized over the preceding 36 months to 69, according to the Finance Minister.

These approvals arrive just days after the UN stated that settlement expansion had attained its highest level since the year 2017.

The latest batch of approvals encompasses the rebuilding of two settlements — Ganim and Kadim — which were evacuated about 20 years ago.

Previously, the Israeli government approved 22 new communities in the territories - described as the largest wave of approvals in many years.

Furthermore, the government also approved blueprints in August to erect in excess of three thousand housing units in the controversial E1 project between the capital and the Maale Adumim settlement, a project that had been stalled for many years amid strong global condemnation.

On that occasion, the Finance Minister said it would "end the notion of a Palestinian state."

Demographic Realities and Global Response

Roughly seven hundred thousand Israeli settlers dwell in around one hundred and sixty settlements in the occupied territories, according to the Israeli monitoring organization Peace Now. This is territory that Palestinians aspire to have for a future independent state.

This ongoing construction has angered Arab states who have repeatedly contended it harms prospects for a peaceful two-state outcome.

It has furthermore fueled concerns about the potential incorporation of the occupied West Bank.

Ex- US President Donald Trump had once cautioned Israel about this step, stating to a publication that Israel would lose its backing from the United States if it proceeded.

In a policy change, the United Kingdom - joined by other countries including Australia and Canada - acknowledged a State of Palestine, a notable although largely symbolic shift in official stance.

Israel strongly rejected this recognition, with PM Benjamin Netanyahu saying that a sovereign Palestine "will not happen."
