Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is leaving the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a series of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.
He remarked in a statement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have served, optimistic about the prospects of the company, and look forward following their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who once presided over Harvard University, announced on recently that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his connections with Epstein.
The newly public messages revealed that Summers exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding the financier's 2019 apprehension for alleged trafficking of underage individuals.
In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company expressed it understood his choice to resign.
"We value his many contributions and the viewpoint he brought to the governing body," OpenAI commented.
This news arrives after the entire Congress of the legislative branch decided on this week to approve a bill that would require the Department of Justice to disclose its files on Jeffrey Epstein.
The legislation will afterward head to the administration of President Trump for approval. Trump has indicated he expects to sign the bill, after modifying his stance on the subject following objections from his followers.
A collection of Epstein-connected emails made public by the Congressional committee last week mentioned several prominent individuals in the Epstein's previous network, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those people.
The emails indicated that the professor and the financier dined together frequently, with he often seeking to connect the official to influential world leaders.
After the messages were made available with the public, the former official said he assumed "complete accountability for my poor judgment to persist in interacting with the financier".
He added that he hoped "to rebuild confidence and fix connections with the persons nearest to me".
Summers served in high-level positions under party leaders; serving as Treasury chief under President Clinton, and as leader of the economic advisory body under President Obama.
He headed the university from five years and is still a faculty member there. When stating his step-down from public commitments recently on Monday, he stated he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Following Summers' announcement on Monday, the policy organization, a liberal research organization in Washington where he was a researcher, announced that Summers was ceased to be affiliated with the group.
Summers entered the leadership of the technology firm, which makes the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a defeated move to oust its top executive the company leader.
