Far-Right Former Lawmaker José Antonio Kast Chosen as Chile's Next Leader.

In a decisive runoff election, ultra-conservative candidate José Antonio Kast has secured the top job in Chile.

A Resounding Victory

After over 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast secured 58.17% of the vote, defeating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.

This marks Kast's third bid for the presidency, having previously been lost by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.

Agenda Built On Security and Migration

Recognized for his unwavering Catholic views and admiration for the rule of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was largely built on promises to combat growing crime and radically restrict migration.

He consistently cited migrants, notably the approximately 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for crime rates. During the campaign, he delivered an final demand for them to exit before the new term begins or face expulsion.

His proposals included Trump-inspired measures such as erecting detention centers, border walls, electric fences, and increasing the military presence on the northern frontier.

Amid a Regional Shift

Many observers interpret Kast's win as part of a larger right-wing wave in Latin America, similar to this year's electoral results in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

However, other analysts further frame it as a part of the predictable alternation of power between left-wing and right-wing administrations since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.

Governing Without a Clear Majority

In spite of his sweeping electoral win, Kast will not command an absolute majority in Congress, neither in the lower house or the Senate, even if various conservative parties are combined together.

This political reality might complicate his agenda, including a vow to cut public spending by a significant sum within 18 months—a proposal for which he has yet to provided concrete steps.

"There are several things about how a Kast presidency will operate that remain unclear because he has not explained how he will do them," said a political expert.

The professor continued, "In terms of the economy, it is very likely we will see austerity policies common for the right-wing. But where there is far less doubt is on law and order, because that has been his flagship issue across the race."
