Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and at least 15 additional individuals got wounded in a seemingly intentional gas explosion at a country home in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The explosion was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the property near the city of Verona to carry out an eviction order for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

All three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman got detained at the site and another man who fled after the explosion was apprehended not long after. Each of them have been taken to hospital.

The detonation could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the area displayed the property turned into a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to displace the three family members in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The head of the region of Veneto, the regional head, said the farmhouse was facing an eviction order due to debts incurred by the siblings.

Negotiators had been sent to engage the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the residents caused the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief the police commander stated to reporters.

A propane tank had been set off, and the detonation directly hit our officers,” he added.

Incendiary devices were also located at the property, the Interior Minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

The wounded by the incident comprised 11 other members of the police force as well as three officers of national police and a emergency responder.

According to the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor was convinced the detonation had happened on a story above the entrance and stated to journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the incident, he said officers had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the gas cylinders being activated”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants stated to local news, mentioning that the three had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister the Defence Minister stood alongside other government officials in commemorating the three officers who had died in the line of duty.
