American Social Media Personality Penalized After Mass Electric Bike Ride on Iconic Australian Bridge

New South Wales police have issued a fine against an American social media personality and handed out two traffic infringement notices for alleged negligent driving after a swarm of electric bicycle users converged on the Sydney Harbour Bridge during the busy commute on Tuesday.

The Event: An Illegal Gathering

A gathering of around 40 people operating e-bikes and motorcycles travelled along the bridge’s main deck, where cycling is prohibited. The assembly then turned around and rode through the downtown area and a nearby district.

"This had potential for people to be injured and killed," remarked NSW police assistant commissioner the officer on the following day.

Law enforcement indicated they did not chase right away the riders out of safety concerns but instead located the assembly at a scenic Sydney lookout near the Botanic Gardens, at which point they broke up.

Penalties Issued for Influencer

On Saturday, police announced they had served the American online personality known as the influencer, 26, with two traffic infringement notices for negligent driving (with no death or previous bodily harm), carrying a fine of $562 and three demerit points per notice, connected to the bridge ride-out. Officials noted that inquiries were continuing.

The personality reportedly has over 3.4m followers on one platform and over 1.2m on the social media app.

Creator's Response

The content creator gave comments to a major newspaper recently after the incident gained traction on news sites and social media, stating he was sorry for giving "the biking community" a negative image.

"I’ll probably take responsibility. That was one of the safest ride-outs I’ve ever seen," he told the publication. "I’m coming here as a guest, and I intend to come here respecting the rules and standards of Sydney. So when I decided to do a meet and greet it was not meant to include a group ride, it was just to greet people under the bridge."

"I’m unfamiliar with the city, it was my fault we found ourselves on the bridge and I had two choices: whether the group completes the entirety of the bridge and comes back, an illegal act. Or we turn around, essentially, before we’re on the bridge. And I made the decision at the time to go back."

National Debate on E-Bike Regulation

The increase of electric bicycles on streets across the country has sparked growing calls for stricter rules. The federal health minister, Mark Butler, recently said that illegal ebikes were a "total menace on the road."

"Kids have done stupid things on bikes since the invention of the early bicycle [but] the injuries that are presenting at our hospital emergency departments are truly severe," he stated. "We’ve got to ensure we prevent these things entering the country [and] police are given the authority to take strong action, to take them away, to crush them, to destroy them."

The state recorded over two hundred injuries associated with ebikes in the previous year. But, in the first seven months of the following year, that figure surged to two hundred thirty-three injuries plus four deaths.
