‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: The striker’s road from injury table to goals with Athletic

The debut appearance the Spanish forward competed in England, an young appearing for the youth squad against German opponents at Adams Park in September 2015, he hit the target. The second time he took the field in British turf, against the English side two months later, he netted. Another occasion, against Manchester City six weeks after that, sure enough, he repeated the feat. Upon his comeback to Manchester to face United at Leigh Sports Village in that year, he did it once more. A spectacular strike, as well. “Truly,” he remarks, “it ranks among my finest I’ve netted.” Thus the club did their duty: he was replaced.

“I became very upset,” the forward reveals, and then he starts laughing. “Probably there’s a recording. We traveled to face United and I performed well. They kept me out of the second half: I was without a signed agreement, goals were flowing, speculation was rife, it’s typical. I don’t know about interest from Newcastle, but I remember reading about Manchester United, the usual talk. It’s unclear the validity, but supposing an offer came, I would have wanted to stay at Bilbao. I feel lucky to be here.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At Lezama, the Basque Country, the early training is set to begin; after it, the quick travel to Loiu airport and another flight to the UK, on this occasion to play Newcastle in the Champions League on midweek. Uttering the name lights him up. It’s turning out to be a challenging campaign for Athletic, partly because of the requirements of being here. Beaten in added time in the weekend clash, they have won only one of their last eight matches and been defeated by Arsenal and the German side in Europe. Yet, look at the overall situation, the big nights he has lived and future challenges, and he feels a calm gratitude within him.

In the the period since he had returned to the club, the striker has been a semi-final participant, stopped at the gates a final at home by the English giants, and has ridden an historic vessel through the waterway flanked by a million fans after securing the Spanish cup, the team’s initial silverware in 40 years. Now he is Athletic’s top scorer in the European competition, where they are unique and making their first appearance in a long period. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he states.

He considered it difficult enough just to earn a spot and he was right. As the child of the former Real Sociedad player Xabi Guruzeta and a dedicated fan at the team he now opposes, the forward is a graduate of Antiguoko, the local academy that nurtured the Arsenal manager, the former star and the Bournemouth manager. He joined Athletic at seventeen but after making his senior debut in August 2018, he suffered a ACL injury, dropped, a relegation and a call back before he could finally secure an opportunity, returning at 26 to experience the peak of the club’s history.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta aims to take on Newcastle in the European competition.

“Entering the youth system thinking you won’t reach the senior squad but every phase you advance through you’re still there and you can notice the proximity. You arrive and then … you’re sent away.” He featured briefly in six matches in a handful of matches between his debut and February 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches there and I tear my cruciate.

“A massive setback but I reflect on it as something positive because it made me change the outlook. Healing from a serious ailment is hard, but it aids growth. You adopt practices new to you. It’s not about neglect, but I did the sessions and then go home, typical youth behavior. At Lezama, you have everything, so do everything. Work, precaution. Hit the weights. With hip imbalance, address that. With decent ankle function, improve it more. Every small aspect: perform them.

“Among professionals you’re going to face physical challenges who have crashed into players 200,000 times. Extremely powerful. I look at photos of me before: my physique was slight. Injuries are inevitable. Present-day images and the change is dramatic. Recovery revealed that. Practice concludes, but further effort is needed. Peers are prepared, really ready; you have to be too.”

Game time is essential. The striker moved upset in that year, in his early twenties, dropping into the second division. With Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he netted three goals in 40 games. During his Amorebieta stint in the latter part of the season, the he found his form. “Players go through it: transfers, releases. With a turnaround, work, believe, and if one day they need someone for your role, a return could happen. Readiness is vital. When the opportunity came, it was a dream come true. Lifting the cup, compete continentally, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”

Little surprise he states this is to be enjoyed. All the more so after last year which, sometimes, was about endurance. After being leading scorer with a high tally, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
