Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often marked by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.
On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and championed its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about watching this lovable family navigate their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to evolve comedy past its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to experience the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
